The Flamecrest Foundation Announces 2026 James P. Vrable Scholarship Recipients

The Flamecrest Foundation is honored to announce the winners of the 2026 James P. Vrable Scholarship for Service to Others: Lauren Galvin and Ty Schlesman. Both students are graduating seniors from Greensburg Salem High School with outstanding histories of volunteerism and community service leadership. They were granted prizes of $2,000 each on Wednesday, May 20, on stage at the school’s annual academic awards assembly.

Lauren Galvin has been a Girl Scout since 2016 and is currently pursuing her Gold Award by developing an educational website and giving presentations to medical professionals about Popliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome — a rare vascular condition she was diagnosed with after three years of unexplained pain. Her volunteer work also includes establishing an eight-week literacy and kindness program at the Delmont Library and mentoring economically underserved campers at Outdoor Odyssey, including one with complex needs. In Lauren’s essay, she writes about an especially impactful event:

Three hours, 50 feet in the air, on the ricketiest structure of my life, my camper, who had complex needs, pulled off her helmet and cried. She wanted to zip-line but was intimidated by the height…I stayed by her side even though my legs pulsed with severe…pain. As her mentor, leaving meant betraying her trust, and I refused to do that.

Ty Schlesman earned his Eagle Scout rank in October 2024, completing a 168-hour project to restore a historic gazebo at the St. Xavier Nature Preserve for the Westmoreland Land Trust. Beyond Scouting, Ty volunteers regularly at Fisher’s Furry Friends animal shelter and has supported the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Zachary’s Mission, and the Westpoint Challenger League, among many others. In his essay, Ty wrote:

Service to the community has been a guiding philosophy. At the core of Scouting is the ‘Do a Good Turn Daily’ principle which shifted my focus from myself to the needs of others. I learned how much kindness can impact a person’s life and how a single good turn can make a difference for someone having a bad day.

The James P. Vrable Scholarship for Service to Others, now in its sixth year, is funded entirely by the Vrable family and administered by The Flamecrest Foundation. Congratulations to Lauren and Ty on this well-deserved honor. We thank them, and everyone who submitted applications this year. Having so many strong contenders always makes for a difficult final decision.
